Adopted May 2026
05/09/2026 Belinda and Paul’s journey to River was not a straight line — it was a path marked by hope, loss, resilience, and a deep commitment to giving a Great Dane the loving home every dog deserves.
Their story with MAGDRL began in the West Virginia chapter, where they became fully approved adopters. Their first match, Cersei, stole their hearts instantly. But the day before they were scheduled to bring her home, Cersei was rushed to Blue Ridge in critical condition. She was bloated, vomiting bile, and an X‑ray revealed a large splenic mass. With no chance at a meaningful recovery, she was humanely euthanized.
Belinda and Paul were devastated. They had already pictured Cersei in their home, on their couch, in their lives.
After relocating to Pennsylvania, they continued their search. They opened their hearts again — first to Calypso, a sweet but emotionally complex Dane who had lived through significant trauma. Calypso bonded intensely with Belinda but struggled with Paul, likely still trying to fulfill the protective role she once held for her previous owner. With compassion, Belinda made the difficult decision to return Calypso to the woman who had entrusted her to them.
Then came another heartbreak: they chose to rehome an older Dane whose owner loved deeply and kept fully up to date on vaccines and regular veterinary care. When the owner was loading her into the car, the dog slipped and fell. It seemed at first like a simple sprain, so everyone agreed to proceed with the rehoming. Once Belinda and Paul brought her home, they realized something was very wrong. They rushed her to the vet, where X‑rays revealed advanced bone cancer that had never shown symptoms and had not been detectable in her prior exams. The fall had shattered an already‑weakened bone. The owner was devastated. Belinda was devastated. Together, they grieved the loss of a dog who had been deeply loved. Belinda stayed with the Dane through the end, ensuring she left this world in loving arms and feeling loved and cherished. Most people would have stepped back after so much loss. But Belinda and Paul didn’t. Their hearts stayed open.
And then — River found them.
Who River Is
River came into MAGDRL as a gentle, sensitive girl who had lived a quiet, sheltered life. She was sweet, affectionate, and eager to bond, but she also carried uncertainty from her past. She needed a family who would give her time, patience, and reassurance — a family who understood that healing is a process.
River was:
Soft‑natured and people‑oriented, happiest when leaning into someone she trusted
Curious but cautious, taking her time to explore new spaces
A classic Velcro Dane, following her humans from room to room
Playful in short bursts, especially once she felt safe
A gentle eater and a quiet companion, content to nap near her people
A dog who blossomed with routine, thriving on predictability and kindness
She was the kind of dog who didn’t demand attention — she simply hoped for it.
The Moment Everything Clicked
When Belinda and Paul met River, something shifted. After everything they had been through, River felt… easy. Natural. Right.
She walked into their home and, almost immediately, into their hearts. Her gentle presence brought peace. Her soft eyes brought comfort. Her quiet confidence grew a little more each day.
River didn’t replace the dogs they lost — she helped heal the wounds they left behind.
Today, River is thriving. She has settled into her new life with joy and certainty, exploring her world with confidence and soaking up affection like she was always meant to be there. Belinda and Paul often say that River feels like the dog who was waiting for them all along.
Their journey reminds us that rescue isn’t always linear. Sometimes it’s messy, emotional, and full of unexpected turns. But when the right dog finally arrives, the healing is profound.
River didn’t just get adopted — she helped mend two hearts that had been broken more than once.
And now, together, they’re writing the happiest chapter yet.
03/18/2026 Meet River
River’s story is as heartfelt as her spirit. She and her housemate Deacon came to rescue after their loving owner—recently diagnosed with early-onset dementia and coping with the loss of his wife—made the difficult decision to surrender them. While River and Deacon aren’t bonded, they’ve shared much of their lives together, and it would mean so much to see them adopted as a pair.
River is a stunning 4‑year‑old Great Dane with a joyful, lively personality. She has a bit more energy than your typical laid‑back Dane and loves to be part of the fun. Whether she’s chasing a ball, exploring the yard, or simply being near her people, River brings warmth and happiness wherever she goes.
Playtime is her favorite part of the day—especially a good game of fetch—but once she’s had her fun, she’s more than happy to settle down and unwind with her family. Her sweet nature and affectionate heart shine through in everything she does.
River gets along beautifully with other dogs and cats, making her a good match for many types of homes. She thrives when she’s involved in family life, surrounded by people who enjoy playing, interacting, and sharing their days with her. If you’re looking for a dog who balances energy with affection and fun with loyalty, River could be the perfect addition to your home.
