Duke

08/29/2026 Duke, “Ducky” was given up to MAGDRL with a female Dane, Lulu when their owner died. Both were initially fostered in DE with Kelley Montgomery. Mickey and Bob were going to adopt Ducky when unfortunately he came up positive for Heartworm (Lulu did also). PA law would not allow a Heartworm positive Dane to relocate into PA.
So Ducky came to NJ when Shea and Jeff Patterson agreed to foster him and nurse him thru his heartworm treatment.

It is not easy to foster a Dane who wants to go run and play when their activity is restricted with heartworm treatment especially when there are other dogs in the home to play with. But Shea and her husband Jeff did a great job with him and he came thru his HW treatment beautifully. Once Ducky was negative for heartworm, Mickey and Bob were still looking to adopt him, they were patient and as the saying goes, it was meant to be!! So with the help of Sara Sweinhart who accompanied them to NJ to adopt him, Ducky was finally able to go to his forever home where he is cherished and adored. I am so happy for all of them and grateful to everyone who made this possible.

07/09/2026 Update from Duke’s current foster home (affectionately known as Ducky):

The second Duck came into foster here he has been nothing short of a gentleman. He has never met a human that he doesn’t immediately love and demand pets from. He spent many days before his heartworm treatment began with the resident dogs there and learning how to play and how to just be a dog. He’s also figuring out how to play with toys

He’s incredibly sweet, goofy and is honestly just happy to be here. He is crate trained, housebroken, doesn’t jump, doesn’t lick people, rarely barks, and he’s been working on his obedience. He knows sit, down, wait (at doorways before walks), come and is working on stay and leave it. He is pretty good on a leash and has learned to walk with a Halti. Due to activity restriction during his treatment he was limited to very short walks in the yard. We will be resuming longer walks & reinforcing leash manners. He is VERY food motivated so he’ll do just about anything for some freeze dried liver or cheese. He’s also the least drooly Dane I’ve ever met!

Duck is the epitome of a Velcro dog and just the sweetest boy ever! Now that he has completed his heartworm treatment, he is ready for his forever home!

His likes consist of:
Being touched all the time if possible
Other dogs to cuddle and play with (medium-XL)
Couches / Beds
Bully sticks
Kongs
Sunbathing

His dislikes:
Thunderstorms (he appreciates a good thunder buddy)
Groundhogs

04/10/2026 Duke has been moved to a NJ foster home and will begin treatment for heartworm, sadly Duke tested positive for Heartworm but not to worry, he will start treatment soon and then will be ready for adoption! Duke is a lovely boy, so friendly and a cuddle bug. He is being spoiled in his foster home until he starts the injections to kill the heartworms, then will have to go on crate rest. Fortunately, Duke is crate trained and learning to walk nicely on a leash. His first vet visit went well, he made lots of friends at his new vet office. Keep your eye on this one, once ready, Duke will be an amazing addition to any home.

02/12/2026 Duke has been thriving in his foster home and continues to show what a loving, easygoing boy he is. He is affectionate and people-oriented, and he especially enjoys relaxing with his head in your lap or keeping an eye on the world from the front window. Duke has a sweet, laid-back nature and loves attention, making him a joy to have around. While he has shared this time with his foster mate, he could also do well in a home of his own with another dog and/or plenty of people to give him the love and companionship he enjoys.

01/07/2026 Duke is a handsome, gentle boy with a calm, steady presence and a quiet confidence that makes him easy to love. He’s the strong, silent type who prefers to sit back, observe, and take his cues from the world around him, but once he feels secure, he warms up to new people quickly and shows his affectionate side in a calm, easygoing way. Duke would do best in a home that appreciates his laid-back nature and gives him the time and reassurance to settle in. He’d likely thrive with a patient adopter who values a mellow companion and understands that his best qualities shine through once he feels safe and comfortable.

12/2025 Lulu and Duke  recently lost both their owner and their home. After so many changes in a short time, they are looking for a stable, loving family who can offer them security, structure, and plenty of attention.
