Jax’s Journey: From Hump Mountain to Home
On June 27th, Jax officially found his forever home with the incredible Terri and Paul C—but his journey to get there is nothing short of extraordinary.
Jax’s story began in the rugged wilds of Hump Mountain, where he was surviving on his own. A kind-hearted woman spotted him—a stray Great Dane, emaciated and suffering from a host of medical issues after enduring life outdoors for far too long. She reached out for help, and that call set off a rescue mission powered by compassion, coordination, and a whole lot of heart.
Thanks to our amazing partnership with Tracy and her team at Greenbrier Humane Society, help was on the way. They made the long drive to Hump Mountain, where they found this gentle giant and gave him his first rabies vaccine and a full medical assessment. In honor of his roots, they gave him his very first name: Humphrey.
Enter Brittany, who drove a great distance to perform Jax’s evaluation. What she discovered was a dog with a resilient spirit, a sweet soul, and a heart full of love—he just needed a chance.
That chance came thanks to Jessica, David, and their two wonderful daughters, who welcomed Jax into their home and hearts. Under their care, he transformed from a stray into a house-trained, affectionate, and well-mannered family companion. They took him to every vet appointment, addressed his medical needs, and gave him the structure and love he so desperately needed. And it was the daughters—who grew deeply attached to him—who gave him the name Jax, a name as strong and bright as his future. Saying goodbye was bittersweet, and their love and care will always be a cherished chapter in Jax’s story. Girls, your hearts and hands shaped him into the amazing dog he is today—thank you for being his heroes.
The next miracle came from Diana and Paula of our Maryland chapter, who worked tirelessly to find Jax the perfect forever family. They vetted and approved the Coopers, ensuring Jax would land exactly where he belongs.
And now, thanks to Terri and Paul Cooper, Jax, newly named Raider, has a safe, loving forever home. A place where he’ll never be alone again, where every day is filled with comfort, companionship, and joy.
From the mountains to a memory foam bed, from uncertainty to unconditional love—Raider’s story is a shining example of what rescue is all about. To everyone who played a part in this incredible journey: your compassion changed a life. Thank you
Meet Jax!
This sweet soul is a Great Dane/Black Lab mix with ALL the personality of a Dane—just in a sleek, 62-pound package! At under a year old, Jax is still a pup at heart, full of playful energy, love, and gratitude.
Why You’ll Love Jax:
His Journey:
Jax came to us after being left outside during the cold months. While we don’t know his full backstory, we do know he’s learning to trust again—he can be a little shy around new people, especially men, but patience brings out his affectionate side.
Home-Ready:
Jax is in good health overall, though he does have some mild hair loss on his belly and legs. New fur is slowly coming in, and he’s not letting it stop him from living his best life!
If you’re looking for a loyal companion who’s sweet, silly, and full of love, Jax might just be your perfect match.
