Augie AKA Chico Adopted August 2025 (3)

The hearts are breaking of the many applicants who were hoping for this puppy but I am very happy to announce that Chico (now called Augustus or Augie for short), our blind Harlequin/Cane Corso mix puppy has gone home with his adopters Ronnie and Cris of NJ, also previous MAGDRL adopters and experienced with special needs canines.

Augie came to us from a rescue partner who asked if we could take him into our rescue when he was 8 weeks old. I of course said YES!  But I was on vacation and could not take him to foster right away.  Big thanks to Ginny and Mark who said they would be happy to foster him until I returned from my vacation.

Ginny and Gina drove into NY city to pick up Chico and Ginny brought him home. Ginny did a lot of research on raising a blind puppy and was prepared to start him off right with clicker training and a halo (bumper) to prevent him from hitting into things he couldn’t see.  Mark and Ginny did a great job with him and started quickly with lots of Facebook postings which attracted lots of applicants for him. Ginny also brought him to Broadway Barks where he was one of our showcased orphans and melted lots of hearts that day.

Ed and I enjoyed having him while he was with us and I know that Ronnie and Cris were perfect for him when they came to meet him. I did decide that he really needed some expert puppy training before sending him home (thanks to the BOD for supporting that) where he did amazingly well and learned so many commands.  Big thanks to Hanlon’s K9 for doing such a great job with him.  I also want to thank them for all the publicity he got on social media and Jahmila for sharing on our MAGDRL sites all of his updates. Ronnie and Cris couldn’t wait to pick him up and bring him home which they did yesterday after a couple of visits at Hanlon’s learning how to continue what was started there.  In addition they plan to continue with Hanlon’s with weekly visits to make sure Augie gets everything he needs to be the best he can be. Augie now has two Golden Retriever siblings who are still not sure they like the little active puppy with the sharp puppy teeth, but I’m sure in time Augie will win them over.
Augie is a special boy and I am sooo happy for him, he is the cutest puppy and will grow into a beautiful Dane boy, he really looks more Dane than anything else.  He was challenging because of his blindness but so smart and very food motivated. I know he will blossom with Ronnie and Cris.

Chico is a blind 10 week old Harlequin Great Dane mix.  He is very smart and adaptive.

He learned to navigate around the house and out into the yard very quickly.

He also learned to find his food and water bowl, and loves to chew on toys.

He sleeps in his crate or just crashes on the floor when he is tired.  He is house trained, he just needs to learn where the back door is so he can ask to go out.

He is wearing a Halo bumper harness so he does not run into things – he bounces off and redirects himself. He wears this while learning where things are in a new environment.

He walks on a leash – but likes to be very close to your feet for reassurance he is going the proper direction.

He is a hungry boy – and very food motivated with treats.  He is learning the clicker means treat and to obey the command given.

He is good at meeting people – a little cautious but with reassurance he is good.

Not a huge fan of the car (he rides in a crate as a puppy) but after a quick song he goes to sleep.

He is testing his boundaries and needs a steady routine and to learn how a good puppy should act.  He can be a feisty boy at times and needs redirection with toys and calm gentle correction. Training will be a requirement of his adoption.  He would do best in a home with another dog to help guide him and play with him.

Chico is a beautiful sweet boy who just needs someone to teach him to be the best boy he can be. He will grow into a big handsome hunk. He is good at meeting other dogs and is young enough to go to a home with cats and children, as long as he gets the training he needs.  Please consider giving Chico a home, he is just an amazing dog!

NOT AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION UNTIL HE COMPLETES BASIC PUPPY TRAINING.
