With a heavy heart our family is hoping for a great home for our Mantle Great Dane “Duke.” We are on orders to relocate OCONUS which will be a 23 hour flight time and we feel that would be too stressful for him.
He is six years old, 155lbs, brown eyes, white paws with a small white diamond shaped pattern on the back of his neck, white chest and is very well trained in and out of the home. Duke is a talker and shares his wants through a subtle toned growl/whine. He is very quick to pick up on voices to the extent he will listen to your phone conversation and know you are on the other end and start saying hello via barking.
He is very cautious in his behavior with our five grandchildren and elderly family members. His temperament is as most Great Danes a gentle giant. He has never been aggressive towards people or other animals. He is, however, protective in the home and yard. He will bark/growl at passersby but should they stop he will want to receive a pet to the head. He does very well during his vet visits although as other dogs too, is anxious or gets slightly stressed.
He typically enjoys having water in the morning and a single meal in the afternoon. His needs are usually suggested when he wants to receive either on his schedule as he will prompt you with a snuggle.
His verbal command recognition includes place, no, backup, poop, pee-pee, sit, and come for example.
He does roam the house freely while the family is out of the house daily and is “not” accustomed to being on any furniture. He knows his bed placement and is perfectly happy to be in any one of them.
Occasionally, he will exhibit mild separation anxiety that passes quickly. This is mentioned as you may hear him bark when leaving the house, but it subsides quickly with him going to his bed.
Duke enjoys bathing in the driveway with a hose and his favorite part of bathing is drying off, he will tussle with the towel and readily accept being dried off.
